1 Year Part Time Conversion Course: BA (Hons) Performance Studies - Curriculum

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course is modular in nature and runs for one evening a week over 3 terms with a dissertation to be competed in the fourth term. All modules are compulsory and must be completed before continuing to the next.

THE COURSE STRUCTURE (subject to change)

Term One:  
• Study Skills Module
• Comedy in Performance
• The Theatre Language of Federico Garcia Lorca

Term Two:  
• The Performer and the Audience
• The History of the Musical

Term Three:  
• Exploring Subtext from Chekhov to the Present Day
• Screen Performance
• Dissertation 5,000 words

ASSESSMENT

• In Term One, students will create a group presentation which will be tutor assessed.  Students will also write a 2,500 word essay during the winter holiday.  These modules are diagnostic therefore none of the marks in Term One will count towards the final degree.

• In Term Two, students will create a group presentation, which will account for 10% of the final mark.  Students will also write a 2,500-word essay during the spring holiday, which will account for 20% of the final mark.

• In Term Three, students will create a group presentation, which will account for 10% of the final Mark, and a critique which will account for 5% or the final mark. Students will undertake a 5,000-word dissertation during the summer vacation.  This will account for 55% of the final mark (changes subject to approval by City University)

SKILLS

Students need a good command of written and spoken English, an aptitude for self motivated study, and a desire to further their understanding of the performing arts by engaging in lively debate and independent research.

GRADUATE PROFILE AND IMAGE

Graduates of the BA (Hons) Performance Studies are trained professionals from a multiplicity of backgrounds who have added a further academic and theoretical dimension to their previous training.  They are self-motivated and positive individuals with an enhanced capacity for articulating ideas and working in diverse groups. Most graduates experience a significant and renewed confidence in their intellectual capacity.

WHAT OUR GRADUATES GO ON TO DO

An often life changing course, the graduates of the BA (Hons) Performance Studies have progressed to MA/MSc courses (Creative Writing, Shakespeare and Theatre, Social Work) and various performance practices and to PGCE courses where they have become fully qualified teachers. Others have achieved promotion in related industries such as business, arts administration, drama training and directing.
