Sixth Form MT6

MT6 (Musical theatre sixth form)

This course aims to develop skills in Dance, Singing and Acting so that the student develops a foundation as a ‘triple threat performer’ as well as continuing with academic studies to‘A’Level standard.

The MT6 course comprises of the study of two A Levels, with the remaining curriculum time allocated to the study of Musical Theatre.

The aim of the Musical Theatre element is to not only provide the students with the building blocks that will hopefully take them on to enjoy a very long & fulfilling career as an artist in the theatre but to encourage & engage their sense of self. In our current ‘X Factor’ climate it is in the students best interest to enter the industry with the largest amount of knowledge - to be an intelligent actor. Alongside their A level study the students also will be given the opportunity to enter Lamda Exams which can add valuable UCAS points.

It is a very challenging course, not only physically but mentally. The sheer volume of work to achieve success not only in the vocational field but also in the academic field should never be underestimated, and commitment to the whole course is vital.

Overview of Year 12 :

The best way to give a good foundation in Musical Theatre is to start off with its history. To see its development through some of the defining eras will give the students invaluable insights into its relevance today.

With this in mind, the students in the first 2-½ terms will be using every half term to study a different decade, beginning with the 30’s and moving through to the 70’s.

Within each decade, they will study 2 – 4 contrasting shows & put together a 12-minute section of Song & Dance to be shown at the last school assembly of each half term. Each show studied will not only give the students an idea of its style, but will also accommodate the various levels of entry onto the course.

The final half term will be used for assessments.

Overview of Year 13 :

The second year will be taken up with more detailed study of Musical Theatre innovators and creative practitioners such as Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Noel Coward, Michael Bennett, Hal Prince, Bob Fosse, Trevor Nunn and Cameron Macintosh. The students will also study Improvisation, audition technique and creative workshops to prepare them for their auditions onto Degree courses.

The working week :

The week is split between A Level study & Vocational study. Vocational study comprises of Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Acting, 1-2-1 Singing, Tap, Ensemble singing, Theatre History & Song & Dance staffed by tutors from the BA course as well as external professionals currently within the industry. Throughout the year there are also Lamda exams included within the course.

The MT6 is staffed by a fantastic team, who, as experienced market leaders, can offer the best available training not only from a technical/performance level but from a holistic one too.

I had the best 3 years of my life.
