BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre)

We are very excited to be offering the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre)!

This BTEC is a stimulating and varied programme of study which is assessed in the main through practical work.

At the end of the two years students will have a qualification which is equivalent to three A levels. Students opting for the BTEC will have the added opportunity of studying for at least one other A level, either in a complimentary course such as Media, or to further their studies in Dance or Drama. We believe this will expose students to a fulfilling combination of practical and theoretical work.

Over the two years they will have classes in the three main disciplines of musical theatre, singing, acting and dancing, working mostly with teachers who come directly from the profession. Students on the BTEC course will also be taught by teachers from the Musical Theatre BA Hons course – a unique opportunity!

What should you expect?
A typical week on the BTEC course will have you perfecting your Ballet and Jazz technique, learning about naturalism in Drama, singing in your ensemble class, learning about the origins of Musical Theatre in your historical context class, and devising your own work, which you will then learn how to market in your business class.

The programme is delivered through a series of Units, which are transferable if you are not able to complete the two years.

Units studied here at Arts Educational Schools are:

Year 12
Performance Workshop
Performing Arts Business
Historical context of Performance
Rehearsing for Performance
Performing to an Audience
Musical Theatre Performance
Devising Plays

Developing Classical Ballet Technique

Year 13
In addition to the above units, students will study the following:

The BTEC not only gives you the skills that you need, but teaches you how to apply them and helps you to find a place in this very demanding profession.

The Vocational curriculum will also be part of your experience here at Arts Educational should you decide upon the BTEC course. You will be expected to take part in:
• Choral Ensemble
• Trinity exams
• Lamda exams
• Body conditioning/extra dance

Performing opportunities

Since an important aspect of the BTEC is that you should be assessed under live performance conditions, we utilise the performance calendar for the school and make sure that work achieved in the class gets shown before an audience.
Current performances planned for the BTEC:

• The Dance Show
• Drama evening
• Classical Theatre Project
• The Year 12 Musical
• A Devised TIE show
• Forum Theatre
• Year 13 Showcase
• Sondheim Night
• Assemblies

Students are also encouraged to make and market their own work, so other performance opportunities which are student led will be welcomed and incorporated into assessed work.

We are launching a new course.
From September 2012 we shall be offering the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Acting
