Foundation Course in Performance - Musical Theatre Option
3 Evenings a week for 32 weeks (during term-time).
19 September 2011 – 20 July 2012
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings 7pm – 9.30pm
The Foundation Course is a one-year, part time course that takes place over three evenings a week. Foundation Course students are valued members of the wider ArtsEd community, and enjoy complimentary tickets to shows within the School of Acting, membership of the library and the gym, and access to the bar and canteen.
Who is the course for?
This course is aimed primarily at students thinking of applying for full-time accredited training at a Drama School or on a practical University course, giving a real taster of what full-time training requires. It is also useful for those who wish to test their capacity for, and commitment to, musical theatre and for those with a particular skill in acting, dance or singing, and who wish to improve on other areas working towards becoming a more ‘balanced’ musical theatre practitioner. Groups are streamed on ability to cater for the range and level of experience that our students start with.
With classes in the evenings, the course is designed to be compatible with paid work, to make it accessible to as many serious candidates as possible, and to avoid students having to face the beginning of full-time training with any burden of debt. The course runs according to strict professional discipline, and requires students to be highly committed, both within and outside class.
What is the course for?
The course aims to teach the craft of musical theatre performance to the required level for entry to professional training. Technique classes are divided equally under the main headings: Acting, Dance and Singing, and are structured to build on and gradually combine the core skills in preparation for your further training in the field. We aim to create an environment which truthfully reflects that of a professional rehearsal space, based on trust, mutual respect and a shared passion. Students learn from within a strong ensemble group whilst the individual is simultaneously nurtured.
Throughout the year students will also develop their presentation skills and boost confidence – critical for auditions both for drama schools and for a successful career as an actor.
The course is taught along a ‘Time Line’ of Musical Theatre, starting with Music Hall and Cabaret, working through to contemporary pieces. This enables us to develop an understanding of the world of Musicals, put all of the study into context and look at a variety of dance and musical styles all falling under the course title.
A more detailed overview of the course is available here.
