Foundation Course in Performance - Musical Theatre Modules
The course consists of five modules, delivered over three terms, with regular half-term breaks and holidays. Within each module there are classes in classical dance technique and other dance styles which vary from module to module. Acting and voice classes will look at character building, approach to text, scenes from musicals and contemporary monologues. Singing classes are delivered in group and one-to-one sessions. At the end of each module students are assessed on practical work. Regular feedback is designed to help everyone get the most from the course, and is constructive rather than pressurised.
Throughout the course students keep a Working Notebook. Students also complete two case studies, looking in more detail at specific aspects of their work. These written aspects of the course are designed to encourage personal reflection, and do not require formal writing skills.
Module 1: (5 weeks)
Looking at approach to text and character, practical musicianship, group singing, vocal technique and classical dance technique and dance projects through the early Musical Review and Cabaret Style.
Module 2: (5 weeks)
This module will look at presentation skills –working on contemporary monologues, song presentation (suitable for auditions), continued dance technique in classical & jazz, and dance repertoire from the Broadway Musical beginnings in Vaudeville, to some of the very first ‘hit’ musicals of the 1920s and 1930s.
Module 3: (5 weeks)
Looking at ‘Book’ or ‘Story Musicals’ which brought new standards in acting and singing and extending the boundaries of song and dance – practically combining the two disciplines for the first time. Students will study material from the Golden Age of Musical Theatre, through classes in continued song presentation, vocal technique, and Musical Theatre dance styles.
Module 4: (5 weeks)
This Module explores the work of living musical theatre writers and includes a series of professional workshops delivered by West End performers.
Module 5: Performance
Students take part in a rigorous rehearsal process, leading to a short run of performances with technical support and in front of a live audience. Students get to put what they have learnt over the year into practice in the context of a complete production process, and can invite friends and family to see their work.
